ALL MY DOGS ARE EYE TESTED CLEAR

PRA, HEREDITARY CATARACT,RETINAL DYSPLASIA.

Some eye diseases are recognised in the American Cocker Spaniel as inherited or are a major genetic component. This article gives you some guidelines on these diseases so that correct breeding can be formulated to help eliminate their presence within the breed.

To better understand the gift of sight, some basic and simple
understanding of hoe the eye works is necessary.

Light passes through the transparent cornea, and then through the iris, and is then focused by the lens to form a picture on the retina.
The retina is a thin membrane lining the interior of the eye and it's outer most layer contains the light sensitive rods and cones.
These light receptors receive stimuli from images and then translates them into nerve impulses which are then relayed to the brain by the optic nerve.
The brain then turns these impulses into recognisable picture's that we see.

Loss of vision occurs when injury or disease destroys some or all of these parts of the eye.
The most significant eye problem in dogs is hereditary eye defects and many many breeds are affected by one or more forms, NOT JUST THE AMERICAN COCKER SPANIEL OR COCKER
SPANIEL.
Four different inherited eye diseases are recognised in the American Cocker Spaniel, they are;- Congenital inherited conditions of
Multi-focal Retinal Dysplasia, Primary Glaucoma, Non-Congenital Hereditary Cataract and Generalised Progressive Retinal Atrophy.
